Over the past few years, I have really gotten more into taking better care of my skin. Two of the most important routines I have are my morning routine and my night routine, and a big part of both of those is my skincare routine. It’s really nice to have the time to myself to take care of my skin. It’s definitely a form of self-care for me.
I have really oily skin, and I have a little bit of redness or might even be rosacea. I also have had allergic reactions a couple of times in the past that have made my whole face swell up to the point that I could barely open my eyes. So I do like to experiment with my skincare products, but I always am a little bit cautious with what I put on my skin since I’m not sure exactly what I might be allergic to.
In today’s post, I am going to go through my daily skincare routine, as well as share some of my favorite products that I have found throughout the years. I have come along way since high school and college when I used to just cleanse with my Clean & Clear and then just leave it at that! Don’t get me wrong, that was a great brand, but there is definitely even better stuff out there if you can afford to invest a little in your skin. I always am looking to find new holy grail products, so be sure to let me know your recommendations – especially if you have oily skin like I do! All of the products I mention will be at the bottom of the post, and they are always linked in the sidebar. I mostly get my skincare products from Sephora, but every once in a while will still pick something up from Target or Ulta as well.
Step 1: Cleanse
Right now I am using a cleanser from Drunk Elephant. I have heard great things about this brand for a long time and had been wanting to try it, but it can be super pricey. This cleanser is as good place to start because it’s not so expensive. So far, I absolutely love it and definitely would continue to use it. I like that it cleans all of my makeup off without making my face feel too tight and dry. You also get a good amount for your money. I have bought cleansers before that give you just tiny amounts, but this has lasted me about a month or so and I’m nowhere near out.
Some cleansers I have used in the past and would recommend include anything by Mario Badescu (super cheap but still effective), as well as Tatcha (on the pricier side but love it!!)
Step 2: Toner
Toner is something that I have just recently started to use, and I do find that it makes a difference. I used to use an entire set of Arbonne skincare products, and that was the first toner I had used. Now I have been using a toner from Bobbi Brown, and again I think I will continue to use this. It has a very refreshing cucumber scent. I do miss having a spray bottle, but other than that I love this product. I feel really refreshed and tightened up in a good way after using it, both in the morning and at night.
Step 3: Moisturize
The last thing I do is use a moisturizer. Right now I have a daytime moisturizer from Arbonne that I use in the morning. I like it for the morning since it has SPF in it. Generally in the past, I have only moisturized at night. My favorite moisturizer I have found so far is the Tatcha Water Cream. It is effective without feeling heavy. It actually lives up to it’s name – it feels like water, it’s so light. But it does leave your skin feeling nice and hydrated. I also just recently started using the Skin Perfecting Lotion from Murad, and I really love it too. Again, it’s not too heavy and doesn’t leave your face feeling thick and sticky, but it seems to be very effective so far. I may even like it better than the Tatcha Water Cream.
Step 4: Eye cream
This is another step that sometimes I only do in the morning or at night, and sometimes do both times. It just depends what the current product I’m using recommends. I recently started using Bye Bye Under Eye by It Cosmetics, and so far it’s my favorite eye cream that I have found. Again, it’s light enough that the texture doesn’t bother me, but I feel like it does help with my dark circles. Eye creams are always super pricey, but this one comes with a good amount of product so I feel like it is definitely worth the price.
Another great eye gel I have found is No More Puffery by Origins. It has a metal rolling ball that you use to apply it’s really nice and cooling. It seems to have an immediate effect, although I don’t know that it’s necessarily a permanent effect. It also lasts FOREVER. I think I used it for like five or six months before I got bored and started using something else instead, just because I wanted to experiment and find something even better. But I would definitely recommend trying it out.
Face masks and other stuff
One more step that I have recently added to my regular routine is doing a face mask once a week (usually on Sunday nights). In the past I have used one by Thank You Farmer, and I love Lush face masks. The face mask I am currently using is the Kale Charcoal Ultimate Detox Mask from Pacifica. It’s a charcoal mask, and my skin feels sooooo soft immediately after using it.
I do need to start exfoliating regularly as well. Right now all I do is use my cotton rounds. I buy the kind that has a rough side for exfoliating and a smooth side for regular use. So I use the exfoliating side once a week or so, but I feel like I should probably be doing more. Let me know your recommendations for exfoliating!
And that’s my everyday skincare routine! I hope you have gotten some good ideas for new products to try out. Let me know what you think if you do try any of them, and also let me know some of your favorite skincare products! I am always up for finding great new products.
At almost 40, I have recently started a skin care routine as well. I can’t believe I waited so long to start. I am loving the results and only wish I had started sooner
It really is life-changing! But better late than never 🙂
I love the layout of your blog! I started getting more into skin care after I suffered from Cystic acne. Omg. It really destroyed my skin so I realized that the only thing that would save my skin is a skin care. So thanks for this. I will definitely check out these products
Thanks! And yes, it definitely is an investment but so worth it.
Thanks for sharing! I love Drunk Elephant’s Jelly Cleanser!
I’m glad to see you keep your routine simple.
I love it so much. Yup I’ve had more complicated routines in the past but I think this is really all I need! Of course everybody’s skin is different though but for me, simple is better.
